James Tomkins
|
Think he deserves his own thread.
Probably for me our most consistent performer this season. Obviously plaudits are being thrown about for the usual suspects, right ly so, but Tomkins has barely put a foot wrong. Was superb at right back, and has been even better at centre half.
Woy as at the game yesterday, if he don't get in the next England squad, ahead if that fucking bag of nails Jagielka, it is a travesty.

Agreed he was playing well last season and I think its fair to say he is the best footballer of our centrehalves, In my opinion having bilic in charge has helped him because he can play a bit more which is one of his strengths.

Always rated the lad and thought he could be an England player, he didn't do very well at the Olympics which may have hurt his chance, selfishly I'd prefer he doesn't get called up, don't want him getting injured or having his head turned by the over paid manc players

The simple FACT is opta rated him our best player last season, he was excellent in the first half of the season.
I know it's fashionable to heap everything on Bilic but the truth is Tomkins was playing as well as he is now this time last season and I'm pretty sure he'll throw in a couple of poor performances over the course of this season as well, most players do.

I've always thought he has potential but, as mentioned below, his form has been too erratic at times and I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd been shipped out a couple of years back. I've never been 100% convinced about him, if I'm honest. I don't know about the West Brom cup game as I wasn't there but when we played them away in the league he was pretty poor and his goal and our win sort of papered over the fact he was pretty bad on the night.
Up to this point, the best season he's had for us was in the Championship, where he was unlucky not to win HoTY in my opinion.
Great to see he's showing some consistency this season. On his day he's as good as Reid (who I'm a big fan of) and would be an asset to a lot of teams. Hope he keeps up the consistent performances. Also, his birthday is the same as mine...

Have to disagree about his form over the last couple of seasons. Last season was an improvement on the previous one, but the were times when he looked like an accident about to happen
Everton away & W Brom away particularly spring to mind

He's a good player. I think what will help him though is playing in a team where he is encouraged to play it out from the back. He's always been a decent footballer, and the way we play now will enable him to show that more.

"I can't help but think that a lot has been down to Bilic"
His form was the best last season as well, so hardly down to Bilic.

Apart from getting himself sent off in the Euro debacle game he's hardly put a foot wrong
He's playing his best football now since he broke into the team. I can't help but think that a lot has been down to Bilic (who helped guide Rio I believe) & a lot down to his improved erstwhile bad-boy attitude

Four very good centre backs. Cannot pretend top have watched our newest signing week in, week out, but completely trust the other three. And Tomkins offers more than merely cover at right-back too.
Hoping to see some more goals from our defenders at set pieces too, with Carrol sucking all the markers away and leaving Collins, Tokins or Reid free to poke home.
As for the Terry/Rio debate - Terry was a solid, traditional centre back for a few seasons who threw himself at everything and grabbed the usual 'lionheart' tag. He worked heart and Chelsea/England fans loved his work ethic. Rio however was a proper, cultured centre-half who for around three seasons was arguably the best in the world at what he did. No contest for me.

And people still want him to play right back. Laughable. Fantastic central defender and future England international.

This a wind up? Terry is finished mate. I've never seen Terry and Cahill ripped apart so badly as I did against Southampton the other week. Anyone with the remote bit of pace and Terry is done for. I know he was never the quickest but he's getting slower

Ask Joachim Lowe how good he thinks Terry is.
Whilst the English media were happy to deflect attention away from their 'brave lionheart' and into Upson, Lowe was quite clear who he set his team to target as the weak link.
